Relocations on the rise

To complete their 17th annual survey, Brookfield polled 123 small, medium and large companies from around the world with 126 relocation related questions. Combined, these firms manage an employee population of 6.9 million worldwide.

  • 55% of the responding companies were headquartered in the Americas
  • 42% were headquartered in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)
  • 3% were headquartered in the Asia-Pacific region

In this year's survey, respondents expected growth in their international assignee populations to jump nearly 50 percent from 2011. That's well beyond what has been reported in Brookfield Global Relocation Services? last three annual trends reports.

If you're in the moving and storage, real estate, freight forwarding, or relocation business that's exceptionally good news regardless of your location since those results indicate a return to new business activity levels not seen since 2007.

Brookfield's latest relocation trends analysis suggests that in 2012 multinational corporations and enterprise organizations are mobilizing workers to fill skills gaps and develop talent, especially in emerging and developing markets.

U.S. Top Destination ? Again!

Once again, the United States and China held their positions as the top destinations for international assignments. Twenty (20%) percent of the respondents listed the U.S at the top followed by 14% percent for China.

Historically the U.S., China and the United Kingdom (UK) represented 77% of the top destinations when combined. In this year's report, however, they only represent 44% ? a good indication that companies involved with international assignments are relocating to a more diverse group of countries than ever before.

A total of 63 countries were listed by this year?s respondents as emerging destinations for them, more than three times the number in any other year. As expected, Brazil, Russia, India and China are among the top emerging locations in this year?s report. While most of these countries can no longer be considered strictly emerging for businesses, most are still considered emerging as locations for international assignments.

This year's Brookfield summary is a good read not only for analyzing the changing attitudes and approaches to relocation reflected in response to the questions, but also for the personal insight which can be gleaned from the verbatim comments included at the bottom of each survey finding.

Brookfield plans to discuss the key findings their 2012 Global Relocation Trends Survey in more detail with interested participants during a webinar on Thursday, June 28, 2012, where they will provide a comprehensive comparative analysis of the most important global mobility issues facing businesses today.
