UMW Roundup: Field hockey; women's, men's soccer; volleyball ...

Three seniors propelled the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4?1 victory over Wesley College Saturday for the school?s Homecoming at the Battleground Athletic Complex.

With the victory, the Eagles clinch the top seed and a bye in next week?s Capital Athletic Conference tournament.

Senior Amy Stevens opened the scoring for UMW less than 10 minutes into the game, scoring on a Caitlin Baker assist. Wesley tied the score just before halftime on a Madison Leone penalty corner score.

In the second, senior Lisa Charney scored 12 minutes into play to give the Eagles the lead, and UMW added late goals from Florence George with 2:32 remaining on a Nicole Guinn assist and from Baker with 31 seconds left on a pass from Charney.

Mary Washington led in shots, 36?5, and in penalty corners, 14?4.

Senior goalie Claire Gianelle had three saves for Mary Washington, which claims the CAC regular season title for the second time in three years.

The Eagles (16?1) will host a CAC tournament semifinal on Oct. 31 against an opponent to be determined.

WOMEN?S SOCCER

Sam Lockley?s late second-half goal lifted the host Eagles to a 3?2 victory over Bridgewater College.

The teams did all their scoring in the second half, and matched each other goal for goal, until Lockley sealed the win on Jessica Bednarcik?s assist.

Erin Reynolds recorded two unassisted goals to pace Mary Washington.

Bridgewater held a 15?12 shot advantage, and also in corner kicks, 4?2.

Charlotte Owens had nine saves in goal for Mary Washington.

The Eagles (12?1?2) will close the regular season on Tuesday when they visit Southern Virginia University at 3:30 p.m.

MEN?S SOCCER

Playing a man down for more than 60 minutes, the Eagles fell fell 1?0 to 14th ranked York College at the Battleground.

UMW had to play a man down after a red card was issued in the 30th minute. The Spartans led in shots, 13?5, and each team had two corner kicks.

Tyler Back had five saves in goal for Mary Washington. York?s Cody Pearson scored the game?s lone goal one minute into the second half.

The Eagles (10?6?1, 3-3 CAC) will host Christopher Newport Thursday at 3:30 p.m. be back in action on Thursday when they host nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University at 3:30 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL

The Eagles swept Mary Baldwin College, 3?0, to cap off Homecoming for the college Saturday night. Game scores were 25?13, 25?9, 25?12.

Kaitlynn Wickersham led the Eagles with eight kills and 13 digs, while Kayla Crawford added six kills and Laura Gomez five.

Courtney Guengerich (14) and Maggie Parrish (13) led UMW in assists, and Christine Tran had 16 digs for the Eagles.

Mary Washington (8?12) will visit York College Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a key CAC match.
