Photos: Scotch tape gives portraits silly and scary twists

MELBOURNE, Jan 14 (Reuters) - A nervous Sam Stosur survived the first test of her annual battle with stage-fright at the Australian Open, but the spotlight is set to focus on the ninth seed after all of her compatriots were dumped from the first round on Monday. Australia's hopes of a home-bred champion at the year's first grand slam have gone unfulfilled for 34 years and, with Lleyton Hewitt crashing out against eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic late in the evening, appeared set for further frustration. ...

Jim Jordan: Seven of America?s 10 wealthiest counties are in the Washington, D.C., area.

Conservative Ohio Republican Jim Jordan has long preached the need to get government spending under control. In 2011, the congressman from Champaign County voted against?raising the nation?s debt ceiling, and he recently opposed?a compromise to keep the nation from plunging off a "fiscal cliff" because he felt it delayed needed spending cuts.

On Jan. 6, Jordan brought his critique of out-of-control government spending to Fox News Sunday, where he compared the federal government to an 18-year-old with a maxed out credit card and argued that Washington was the only winner in the "fiscal cliff deal," while his constituents in Ohio lost money.
?
"Washington always wins," said Jordan, whose congressional district was recently altered to include parts of Lorain County "The politicians, the consultants, the folks here always win. In fact, seven of the 10 wealthiest counties are in the D.C. area. ?. . . ?It's regular Americans who lose and it's about time we said stop this madness, cut up the credit card, we want a solution. Not another Washington deal which helps D.C."

PolitiFact Ohio thought Jordan?s point about the relative wealth of the counties around Washington, D.C. was worth exploring.

It didn?t take long to find the statistics behind his assertion. An article in The Washington Post ?last September that examined 2011 Census data verified Jordan?s claim that seven of the 10 counties?in the nation with the highest household incomes are in the Greater Washington region. ?

Loudoun, Fairfax and Arlington counties in Virginia held the top three spots with respective median household incomes of $119,134, $105,797 and $100,735. Howard County, Maryland, ($98,953) ranked fifth. Prince WIlliam County in Virginia ($95,146) ranked seventh. Fauquier County, Virginia ($93,762) was eighth. Montgomery County in Maryland ($92,909) placed 10th.

That?s seven of the top 10. And just for good measure, nearby Charles County in Maryland ranked 11th with a median household income of $91,733.

The District of Columbia itself, which the Census Bureau compared to both states and counties, had a median income of around $63,000, which would have been 125th among counties and fifth among states.

Just two counties in Jordan?s home state ranked among the nation?s 100 most affluent for 2011. Delaware County, north of Columbus, ranked 18th with an income of $85,365. Warren County northeast of Cincinnati ranked 80th at $69,201. Neither, by the way, is in his House district.

According to Census Bureau?estimates, Ohio?s $45,749 median household income put the state in the bottom third, well below the national average of $50,502. Maryland ranked No. 1 in 2011, with a median income of $70,004. Virginia ($61,882 ) ranked ninth. Mississippi had the nation?s lowest median household income: $36,919.

The Washington Post attributed the region?s relative opulence to "the stability of an economy built on the pillars of the federal government, its legions of contractors and a flourishing high-tech sector." It noted that the Washington metropolitan area has the nation?s highest level of adults with college degrees, that a high proportion of its households have two wage earners and that many of its married couples put off childbearing until they?re professionally established.

The Post said that in 2007, before the recession began, five counties in suburban Washington made it into the top 10. By 2010, there were six. The seven in the latest ranking are "all-time high," it said.

"It?s not only that we have low unemployment and a lot of dual-income households," Stephen Fuller, director of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University told the Post. "We lost a few government jobs, but not the high-paying, professional business-service jobs that are still growing, if not as fast as they used to. Since the rest of the country is in such poor shape, we just have to show a little bit of growth here, and we look pretty good."

Jordan?s claim that the Washington area contains seven of the 10 wealthiest counties in the nation checks out.

On the Truth-o-Meter, his claim rates True.

Meet China's 'Little Emperors': The Pessimistic Generation That Could Derail the Economy

China's three-decade-old population-control system in urban areas, the so called One Child policy, has created a new population of Chinese that some experts are saying puts the nation's economy at risk.

But who are the people who could jeopardize China's future? According to a new study, they are "Little Emperors": single children, usually men, who grow up to be "significantly less trusting, less trustworthy, more risk-averse" than people born before the policy took effect. ?

The new study from Australia?s Monash University and the Australian National University, based on the research of Nisvan Erkal, is called "Little Emperors: Behavioral Impacts of China's One-Child Policy."

The study used a series of "economic games" on a sampling of 421 subjects born just before and during the peak years of the One-Child policy, from 1975 to 1983, and determined that Little Emperors are more pessimistic and less competitive and conscientious than people born slightly earlier.

The results suggested that China's future workforce will have be less inclined to risk taking, and may cause a decline in entrepreneurship.?

In one of the activities required by the study, subjects were asked to either exchange or invest small increments of money and make various other economic decisions which revealed behavioral styles (ie. trust and risk-taking traits). Participants born during the policy had lower rates of investment returns than those who were not: 30.4 percent versus 35.4 percent.?

The study, of course, is not indicative of the behavior of the entire population born from the policy, but the results are still significant.

The study is the first of its kind, contributing economic-related data to a longstanding theory that the One-Child generation will somehow disrupt China's economy and social structure.

"In China, there is a very common belief that the one-child generation is spoilt and selfish and they are not hardworking ? even though it is a common belief, no one has ever tested this thing, or given hard evidence -- and that is why we decided to study this," said Xin Meng, a professor at the Australian National University in Canberra who is of Chinese origin, to the BBC.?

The views cited by professor Meng are common in China, where many other theories have cast in a negative light an entire generation of children coddled by both parents and both sets of grandparents. Within the generation, young men outnumber women. These likely single men will also be expected to bear the financial weight of caring for their elders, again usually including both sets of grandparents.?

Though the policy is not enforced nearly as rigidly as it used to be, it still technically exists. Faced with backlash on the unintended negative effects of the policy, the government has been quietly reconsidering it, as groups speak out in opposition.

According to the Shanghaiist, a Shanghai-based news blog, the China Development Research Foundation, a government think tank, called for the relaxation of the policy this past October as the country would be paying "a huge political and social cost" otherwise.?

Meraki MR16 Cloud Managed Wireless Access Point

Small to medium businesses trying to extend their wireless network over a relatively large area without losing signal strength have to consider budgets when evaluating networking gear. Thankfully, it is easy to set up and configure a mesh network with Meraki's access points. Packed with of enterprise-rich features, the Meraki MR16 Cloud Managed Wireless Access Point??also offers good throughput, all at an attractive price.

The MR16 gives IT professionals an easy way to deploy a secured, granularly managed AP for wireless clients to access a business network. The $649 price tag may seem high end for smaller businesses, but is well within the reach of mid-sized businesses and is comparable with similar business access points.

Meraki's online administration differentiates the product from competitor models and is worth every penny spent, especially if the network requires multiple access points. Meraki has done a far better job than the competition in integrating cloud capability in its products. Its Cloud Controller software allows administrators to manage multiple APs in a mesh network via a single interface. Considering that Cisco is trying to integrate cloud-based administration and management with its own networking gear, buying Meraki for $1.2 billion??in November was a smart move for the networking giant.

Hardware Specifications and Appearance
Intended to be inconspicuous, the MR16 is a simple white box with a glossy-finish that can be mounted on the wall or placed on a flat surface. Measuring 7.3" x 5.8" x 1" (HWD) and weighing a mere 17 ounces, the MR16 has one RJ-45 Ethernet port to connect to the network. The top of the access point has four LED indicators to show signal strength, Ethernet connectivity, power, and bootup status. When the box is downloading a firmware upgrade, the power indicator blinks orange. The power adapter is at the bottom of the box. The box has integrated omni-directional antennas.

The MR16 has one 802.11 b/g/n and one 802.11 a/n radio and operates concurrently in 2.4 and 5GHz bands. The SMB-focused access point has two spatial stream MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology that can support a theoretical 600 Mbps throughput. The AP has a 3 dBi antenna for the 2.4 GHz radio and a 5 dBi antenna for the 5GHz radio.

Like the previously reviewed HP E-MSM460, the MR16 utilizes beamforming to improve coverage over a wide area. The technology directs clients towards the 5-GHz band to improve performance and coverage. This is important because businesses may need to have the access points at great distances from each other.

Setup
As promised, setup was a breeze. After unpacking the access point, I plugged it into a power outlet and plugged in an Ethernet cable to the RJ-45 port and to an available port on the network switch. When powered on, the AP automatically contacted Meraki's cloud servers to download and install the latest firmware. The switch's power LED flashed orange for the entire update process. According to the documentation accompanying the unit, the upgrade process can take up to an hour, but it took me less than 20 minutes. Once the upgrade was complete, the power light switched to green and I was ready to check out the AP's management dashboard.

Meraki sent only one MR16 802.11n access point for this review. Meraki's access points use the Meraki Cloud Controller, which means that same model APs detect each other automatically to create the mesh network. If I'd had more than one MR16, all I would have had to do was plug in the access points within range of each other to automatically have a mesh network. The other APs don't need to be connected to the network switch; they connect with each other wirelessly.

To configure the network properly, I also needed a Cloud license key (at $150 per year per access point) for each access point.

Once the firmware upgrade was complete, I logged into Meraki's Web dashboard, (http://dashboard.meraki.com) to administer my access point. I created a network name on the dashboard and added the MR16 to the network by entering the AP's order number (from the invoice) or the serial number (a label on the underside of the unit). Separate networks must be created for different Meraki device types (MR, MX, MS, etc) even if they are all deployed in the same network, but if I'd had multiple MR16s, they would have been added to the same network.

It took a while?about 11 minutes? for Meraki's servers to detect the AP and associate it with my network, but once that was done, I could see on the dashboard what IP Address and configuration settings it had received from the network, as well as the device's MAC address, wireless radio status, and uptime.

For most cases, there's no need to change the assigned IP address or enter any other networking information. It truly is drop-and-go. (If you really need to add static IP addresses, each access point has its own built-in Web server for configuration)

In fact, all you need is someone to plug in the MR16 at a remote location and its self-configuring capabilities will take care of deployment. There is no need for on-site IT staff.

Management
Meraki makes it possible for small businesses to deploy a mesh sufficient to cover a geographic area and support a large number of users without a wireless networking guru. Management is just as easy? Next: Management

Former church volunteer faces child porn charges

CAMAS, Wash. ? A 24-year-old church volunteer from Vancouver was arrested this week and charged with possessing and distributing child pornography.

Bradley J. Gilliam was arrested on Tuesday, according to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement spokesman Andrew Munoz. ICE is the agency tasked with stopping the trafficking of child pornography.

Agents and local police searched a search warrant at Gilliam?s house last summer and said they seized a laptop and several other storage devices. Forensic analysts found thousands of images and videos of kids engaging in sexual activity, Munoz said.

Investigators said Gilliam traded child porn, including images of toddlers, on peer-to-peer networks using the username ?Bllover69.? They used that username to track an IP address used at Gilliam?s Vancouver home.

Munoz said Gilliam was enrolled in classes to become a child sex abuse counselor and that he also volunteered with a youth group at Camas Grace Church.

Agents alerted officials at Camas Grace Church when they first found the pornography and he was immediately banned from participating in youth activities.

Pastor Dave McCave at the church said Gilliam had only volunteered with them for a brief time before he was let go because of the investigation.

McCave said Gilliam helped with simple things like setting up chairs and was never alone with kids. McCave added that nothing came up in a background check they ran on him.

A?court document filed in the case shows that Gilliam was investigated in 2003 for a child rape in Camas, but that charges weren't pursued at the request of the victim's parents. Gilliam was just 15 years old at the time.

Gilliam has his next court appearance on Monday in federal court in Tacoma.

The investigation was part of Operation Predator, a nationwide effort to stop child pornography, sexual predators who target children and child sex traffickers. If you suspect someone of committing any of these crimes, you can call an ICE tipline at 1-866-347-2423 or fill out an online form.
